Choices Limited in School Cafeterias


The Illinois State Board of Education considered a proposal to restrict the types of food sold in the state's elementary and middle school cafeterias last week, the Peoria Journal Star reports. The new rules have not yet been voted upon but would include rules regulating food purchase based on age.

"The new rules pertain to food selection and portion size and would enact stricter requirements for meals served to younger students. For example, one rule would limit the serving size of fruit smoothies made with low-fat yogurt or low-fat dairy alternatives to 200 calories or less for students in sixth grade or above, but it would bar the smoothies outright for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A second rule would eliminate whole milk in favor of skim, low-fat or reduced-fat milk for all students in eighth grade or below," says the Peoria Journal Star. As you can imagine there are many critics following this proposal. Many believe the rules are too restrictive. However in a society with a growing childhood obesity population something must be done. This may be a productive solution to unhealthy eating in the schools. If we restrict food choices aren't we helping our young population?

Whether you are for or against this proposal, we all have to start working together. You as a parent can regulate your own set of rules within your home. Packing a lunch and healthy snacks, like fruits, veggies, or low-fat yogurt for your child to eat throughout the day is a great solution to portion control. As the "packer" you are choosing what goes in your child's body. Give them healthy options throughout the day and you help them form healthy eating habits for life!

Together we can impact our children. Eating habits are learned, so remember what you eat is being noted. Be a good role model for your child. If you eat healthy then your child will follow. Make the change; choose healthy lunches and snacks everyday!
